Day 1 (6/29/2011): Arrive Great Fall, Montana •My flight leaving SFO at 5:34 p.m., arriveing GTF at 11:56 p.m. •Meeting either 12 p.m. at San Francisco or 6/30 12 a.m. at Great Fall International airport •Rent a big van for 8-10 people •Great Falls, Montana, is a historic city with the flavor of the Old West, only 2 hours and 12 minutes from Glacier National Park Day 2 & 3 & 4 (6/30 – 7/2): Glacier National Park(east entrance,Two Medicine) Shopping the food, propane and bear spray Two Medicine Valley, is an area rich in Native American history. Because Glacier’s showy scenery comes without the serious oxygen deprivation that plagues hikers in higher parks, you can top three passes in a hike without killing yourself. The two-day, 19-mile Dawson Pass loop features two scenic passes (Dawson Pass & Pitamakin Pass) and a stretch of alpine trail that’s outstanding even by Glacier’s standards. Start today at Two Medicine Campground and plan to camp at Upper Two Medicine Lake or No Name Lake. A short, steep climb to Dawson Pass puts you at the start of one of the finest sky walks anywhere. For three miles between Dawson Pass and Mount Morgan, the trail follows a narrow ridge. “Nothing but peak upon peak—you’re on top of the world,” says Dick Honrath, who has spent 25 summers hiking every trail in the park. The homestretch back to Two Medicine follows the Continental Divide Trail. We will keep our eyes peeled for the spectacular array of wildlife that is frequently seen here. Moose, elk, and deer graze on tall green grasses and wildflowers in sunny meadows, while grizzlies, black bears, coyotes, wolves, and mountain lions seek refuge from the summer heat in shady aspen groves. We may also spot majestic bald eagles. Day 5 (7/3) : Siyeh Pass & Sunrift Gorge Hit the Going-to-the-Sun Road by 7 a.m., park at Siyeh Bend. There, take off on an 11-mile day hike through Preston Park’s blooming meadows. The rocky, windblown pass into Sunrift Gorge is one of the highest sections of trail in the park. Down in the gorge, waterfalls spill from Sexton Glacier, high on Matahpi Peak. Finish by walking one mile along Saint Mary Lake to the shuttle-bus stop at Sun Point for a lift back to our car. Pop your tent at Rising Sun Campground. Going-to-the-Sun Mountain 9642ft; Mount Siyeh 10014ft; Days 6 & 7 (7/4- 7/5): Logan Pass to Many Glacier via Garden Wall & Swiftcurrent trails Camp at Granite Park Best lookout in the park: Swiftcurrent Pass Day 8 (7/6): Going-to-the-Sun Road Logan Pass to Hidden Lake Lake McDonald Huckleberry Mtn 6593ft Camp at Sprague Creek Day 9 (7/7): Many Glacier Grinnell Glacier Camp at Many Glacier Day 10 & 11 & 12 (7/8 - 7/10): Waterton Park Day 13 (7/11): go home leaving 5 p.m. from GTF
