Coyote Ridge (野狼山) is just beyond south border of San Jose, up from Coyote Creek Golf Course. The Silicon Valley Land Conservancy, along with CNPS and Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, is celebrating one of the most spectacular wildflower blooms in the Bay Area by offering docent led tours to view this incredible serpentine grassland. The dump is at the foot and normally closed to public. The associated endemic plant community on Coyote Ridge supports the largest remaining population of the threatened Bay checkerspot butterfly, as well as many rare and uncommon plant species. The interpretive hikes will include discussions on endemic plant communities, the effects of air pollution on terrestrial environments, cattle grazing as a management tool and conservation through mitigation. Breathtaking views and natural history discussions will be plentiful. Hikes begin promptly at 2:00pm and will conclude no later than 5:00pm. We also ask that you bring at least 1 liter of water per person, layered clothing for the warm valley and cool ridge, sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a lunch/snack to enjoy at the top of Coyote Ridge. The walk will be about 3 miles round trip and 800 ft elevation gain with some cross-county scrambling. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
