When Cary mentioned that someone should have written something about Mt. Dana, I said "right, after all, our reunion officially began on Jul 31." So, I started to write. But since I wasn't intended to do so when I was in Yosemite, so I didn't put down any note, then my aging brain doesn't function well, which means a lot of data has already been wiped out. I haven't done Chinese input for quite a while now. my little Apple also gave me a hard time. It runs an old edition of NeoOffice i/o Microsoft Word, which I was familiar to, I have to write over and over again because its auto save sometimes didn't work and the system often went down unexpectedly. I am still working on it, but I think I should ask you first for your favour to fill in/correct the missing/incorrect data, and at the presumption that still no one has mentioned about working on the same subject. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 邱素娟 郭東鷹 wore sandals skiing through ice patch, up and down Mt. Dana, . 王聰叡 wore a size 7 and half boot on one foot and crammed another foot into a size 6 and half shoe (per 小倩's kind preparation) and still smiled all the way. After the climb 周宏明 opened a watermelon stand in the parking lot by the ranger station right in front of 5 potter potty. Watermelon donated by 蕭萌區, those were the best watermelons you ever dreamed about. And 阿?叔叔 became ?? This is a wonderful trip indeed. I checked web sites before I left for Yosemite and found that the trail is an unofficial use trail, not maintained, and not an easy trail for some people. Mount Dana, at 13,053 (or 13,057, 13,061) ft, is a class 1-2 climb (see www.answers.com/topic/yosemite-decimal-system for the definition of the classes). We hiked 3 miles (5 km) and gained 3100 foot (940 m) from the park entrance at Tioga Pass (elevation 9943 ft, 3030.6 m). There seems no difficulty down hills except a couple of dangerous situations sliding down the snow slope. Some people wasted time and energy looking for the downward trail. 張世英 smiled at the later time. Hi, Here is some data about Mt. Dana (3981 Meters). If there is a 美國百岳 list then Mt. Dana should be one of them. It is higher than the highest mountain in north-east Asia - Mt. Jade (玉山 3952 Meters). We should be proud of our accomplishment. "We did not come in vain." Good weather, good view, good hike, and good companions. And of course "no pains, no gains...." ============================================================= Mount Dana is a mountain on the eastern edge of Yosemite National Park in the U.S. state of California. At an elevation of 13,061 feet (3981 Meters), it is the 420th highest mountain in the world, the 112th highest mountain in North America, the 88th highest mountain in the U.S., the 18th highest mountain in California, and the 2nd highest mountain in Yosemite (after Mount Lyell). Mount Dana is the highest peak in Yosemite that does not require the aid of ropes in rock climbing. Mount Dana is named after James Dwight Dana, who was a professor of geology at Yale College. Mount Dana is composed of prebatholithic rock that is mostly reddish metamorphic rock, which was composed by metavolcanics of surfacing magma from the Mesozoic Era. Mount Dana includes a northern face includes a small, receding glacier known as the Dana Glacier. The Hike Mount Dana is typically hiked from its western face beginning at the Tioga Pass Yosemite Park entrance and is a class 1-2 hike, rising 3108 feet in elevation in 2.9 miles from the park entrance at Tioga Pass (a 20.3% average grade). There is a clearly marked path to just above tree line. After topping a ridge a set of use-paths and ducked routes are present, with the main path running along the easterly ridgeline. Additionally, numerous alternate trail segments begin and end at various points on the southwestern face, making parts of this hike a difficult class 2. The path segments turn into scree toward the summit. A shallow stone-walled shelter and register are found there. Total hiking time is approximately 3.5 - 6 hours depending on acclimatization. After reaching a plateau above tree line almost all vegetation disappears with the exception of lichen and a few high alpine Sky Pilot (Polemonium eximium). Fauna are largely limited to spiders and insects, such as black/brown grasshoppers. The only mammals other than humans are marmots, often fed by hikers against Park warnings. Thunderstorms are known to arise suddenly, making the rocks slippery, and the hiking dangerous. Temperatures can drop very quickly, with hot 100 F weather dropping to freezing levels during a hailstorm. Even experienced hikers can face altitude sickness, due to the high elevation. First ascent - 1863 by Josiah Whitney, William H. Brewer, and Charles F. Hoffmann ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 蕭萌區 哈哈! Things fall in place perfectly. MING MING, wake up, you are Team A, not Team D. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 古競祥 從山上下來還覺得挺輕鬆的,如今看到大少介紹Mt Dana的文字才知凶險,想來山社真是十分幸運的一群,在如此翻臉像翻書的高山上,卻剛剛好把握到最佳的天候狀況,平平安安的爬山,快樂的回味艱苦的攀爬過程、刺激的雪坡滑降,重拾年輕時的單純友情,真好。 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 邱素娟 Nice follow up. Thought ?? 名了,嘻嘻,明天,no , the day after 明天 I will start the preparation work for 鍛鍊. Buy some fancy, colorful clothing like 阿?always does. I guess this is the benefit of being friends with Iron man 大哥。 A couple of more check-ups from him, the possibility of becoming 1/10 Iron woman is getting bigger. So promising, though I hope 古大哥 would be more forgetful. P.S. To set the record straight. 1. Little Ah-Chuan was on a mission: to scare away potential bears ( though the imagination was not materialized), so everybody could have the juicy sweet watermelon after the hard climb. 2. 阿?叔叔 became ??叔叔 is from 聰叡家的Alex. 阿? is always 神勇,I dare not 虧 他。 I have never hiked such a height. The only hiking I've done has been walking trails, albeit on occassion. The first day I walked downhill for 4 miles. Already my legs has started to hurt. By the second day, my friend insisted me to hiked Mt. Dana. I had no clue how tall this mountain was. Halfway up the mountain, my heart beated rapidly and was pounding. I thought my heart was going to jump out. Fortunately I met Ching Hsiang Ku (If I spelled your name correct) and he patiently told me the secret to hiking a mountain -- take 10 small steps, rest, and take deep breaths. Eventually my body got accustomed to the altitude. By noon, I was exhausted and had no desire to continue hiking. I began to think of all the errands that I needed to do the next day. So I decided to hike back downhill alone. Fortunately I encountered Tony Shu and he told me to slow down and to not get lost. I followed the markers and safely arrived to the parking lot around 2p.m. I was cold and headache. In a couple of hours, some hiker gave me some medicine. This has been an unforgettable experience. I'll always remember your friendship and thoughtfulness. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 高瓊華 我想有完沒了的不只是那 pre- or pre-pre reunion 或 post or post-post reunion 的活動. Dana 或 just show up. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
